As this inevitability becomes known, the military takes great interest and approaches Dr. Brad Decker to construct the first human android. Upon completion, the android is to be placed behind enemy lines resembling the people of that nation and would then gather and relay intel. With great excitement and enthusiasm, Decker the once child robotics prodigy, throws himself into the project and puts together a tight knit team that will give him the needed help he needs to make it happen.

 

After three years of intense work, the mobility testing is about to begin. It’s at this time that Decker and his team are informed by Colonel Marcus Chapman, who is in charge of overseeing the project, that the android will not be used merely for intel but for heavy combat, knowing that the bionics used in the android’s construction would give it superior human strength and leave it virtually unstoppable. When Decker and his team refuse to continue they are shown a clause in the contract they signed which allows the military to make modifications as they deem necessary.

The team has no choice but to continue. But not without first assessing that although they had agreed to construct a working android, it was only assumed… but never written in the contract that it would be male. Knowing it would be their way of getting back at Chapman, the team agrees to construct the android as a female. Decker then writes a high tech program that once uploaded to the android’s CPU will cause it to believe it is in fact female. He also installs an emotion chip that will allow the android to experience feelings of happiness, sadness, fear… and anger. However, once the program was uploaded Decker discovers some unexpected results. Upon becoming self- aware of its existence, it accesses the computer system it’s connected to and found the files about the android project X-100 which is to be used for military combat in war situations. It also finds its way out to the web and accesses any information it deems necessary to understand who it is and the world it now exists in. From this information, it begins to reason and build its own values, morals and belief system. Once Brad and his team find out just how human the android that they had begun referring to as “Andi” had become, they know they cannot let the military carry out their plans for her. They make the decision to accept the consequences of completing her, and then somehow getting her off base and away from Chapman who wants to create more war cyborgs with Andi as the model to design them from. But as they begin to carry out their own mission, they find out quickly just how deep and how high up this project runs. And to what means Chapman will use to get his cyborg war machine back.

A sci-fi story filled with action and suspense, with some well-placed humor and a love story to boot, Pinocchio Symptoms is a story about taking a stand, displaying integrity, believing in one’s self and in those we surround ourselves with. In trusting and taking that step of faith… even when we have no idea where it will take us.
